The MOTS-c peptide

What is MOTS-c?

The MOTS-c peptide is a small signaling peptide just 16 amino acids long. 

Unlike most peptide hormones, which are encoded in nuclear DNA, MOTS-c is encoded inside mitochondrial DNA 

— making it part of a unique family called mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs).


Mechanism of Action

MOTS-c primarily functions by activating intracellular AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase)

AMPK is often referred to as the body's "master metabolic switch," and this pathway is activated by conditions such as exercise and caloric restriction.


Upon activating AMPK, MOTS-c has been shown in studies to:

  • Increase glucose uptake

  • Enhance fatty acid oxidation (promoting fat utilization)

  • Improve insulin sensitivity

  • Regulate mitochondrial energy metabolism

  • Modulate the expression of relevant genes under metabolic stress


Consequently, MOTS-c is often referred to as an "exercise mimetic

because it activates metabolic pathways similar to those triggered by exercise; however, this does not mean it can replace exercise.


In recent years, MOTS-c has garnered significant attention within the fields of longevity and functional medicine in Europe and the United States due to its association with mitochondrial health, metabolic optimization, and healthy aging. It is frequently discussed alongside other research peptides such as GHK-Cu, BPC-157, and Epitalon. However, the scientific community generally holds the view that while it shows promise, further high-quality clinical trials are required to definitively establish its efficacy and safety in humans.


The MOTS-c peptide
